Aarhus University, May  2006. A window to the past.  Research on horseshoe crabs can tell us a lot about the early periods of animal evolution (Photo by J. Dago, Jyllandsposten).

Kattegatcenter, May  2006. A closer look under the shield shows that these animals a not crabs, but have more in common with spiders (Photo by J. Dago, Jyllandsposten).

Phuket Marine Station, Thailand, December 2006. Tobias is setting up the pilot experiments to study the physiologiy of Asian horseshoe crabs in the future.

Phuket Marine Station, Thailand, December 2006. Kasper is measuring animals with our digitizing tool in order obtain a 3 dimensional reconstruction of the body.

Phuket Marine Station, Thailand, December 2006. Matthias is talking to local fishermen which can give us valuable information for the protection of the horseshoe crabs. The natives know most about where the animals are frequently found, how they are caught, how heavy they are overfished, and where they have disappeared.

Phuket Marine Station, Thailand, December 2006. A beautiful place to carry out research with modern facilities to collect and store marine animals. It is very difficult to find any traces of the Tsunami that hit the coast in 2003.

Physiology_Boat_Blood1

Galathea3 - Vaedderen, April 2007. Melissa Wetter and Thomas Nielsen have started the physiological experiments. Currently they are running experiments on the horseshoe crabs at low salinities and analyzing the osmolarity of the blue blood.
