From preliminary survey to final plan for the voyage
On behalf of the Danish Expedition Foundation’s board of trustees, the Research Agency invited proposals and ideas for destinations and projects to be included in the Galathea 3 expedition already in 2004.
The invitation was implemented as a public preliminary survey, for which scientists and research institutions were invited to submit proposals for destinations and possible projects to be included in the expedition.
The preliminary survey was solely to be used as a tool for the Danish Expedition Foundation in connection with determining the route of the voyage the planning of the rebuilding and equipment of the expedition ship.
In June 2005, the Danish Expedition Foundation invited specific research applications for the expedition. The deadline for submission of project proposals was 2 September. By this date, the Danish Expedition Foundation had received a total of 124 project proposals, which were subsequently assessed by the independent research councils.
On 29 November 2005, the Danish Expedition Foundation issued an announcement of the total of 71 projects that had been selected to participate in the expedition.
