New route confirmed

The Danish Expedition Foundation’s Board has agreed Galathea 3’s new itinerary.  The decision to change the route was taken last month in light of developments in the Middle East and South East Asia.

As originally planned, Galathea 3 will set sail from Copenhagen on 11 August 2006 for the North Atlantic, stopping in the Faeroe Islands and Greenland. The course then heads south via the Azores to Accra/Ghana and Cape Town, crossing the Indian Ocean to Broome, a port on the North Western coast of Australia.  The expedition continues south round Australia via Perth, Hobart/Tasmania and Sydney to the Solomon Sea and the capital of the Solomon Islands, Honiara.  The next leg takes the Vaedderen to Christchurch, New Zealand, which will be the last port of call before she heads for Antartica.

The rest of the route is unchanged.  It follows the west coast of South America, putting in at Valparaiso and Antofagasta.  Thence on to the Galapagos Islands, via the Panama Canal to the US Virgin Islands and northwards to Boston and New York. After crossing the Atlantic, the expedition reaches Copenhagen at the end of April 2007.

The new itinerary covers about 39,000 nautical miles as opposed to the earlier planned 34,000.  There will be two fewer ports of call and the number of days at sea is reduced from 46 to 42.
