Historical perspective   Denmark has a long tradition for voyages of discovery and expeditions. From Jens Munk and Carsten Niebuhr to Galathea 1, Galathea 2 - and now Galathea 3.

Route - Galathea 2

The frigate Galathea left Copenhagen on 15 October 1950 and sailed south around Africa to India, where the expedition, exactly like the first expedition, called at the Nicobar Islands.

July and August 1951 were spent primarily on scientific research of the deep sea around the Philippines. From there, the ship continued its voyage to Australia. The expedition also visited Hawaii before sailing through the Panama Canal and back to Denmark.
