Biogeochemistry, soil sciences and environmental impact and modelling:

My research has been focused on the controls and environmental impacts resulting from oxidation processes in the vadose zone, including sulphide oxidation and chemical fluxes in frozen soils, heavy metal release and mobilization and decomposition of organic matter in natural ecosystems. Research includes gas transport processes of reactive gas species in the vadose zone with a focus on simulating interacting water and gas transport processes with weathering processes at site to landscape scales.

Main research areas

My research focus on urban issues in developing countries cuts across the fields of development, urban, social and economic geography. Starting from a focus on low-income housing I have expanded my research interests to include land and housing markets, governance and civil society, home-based enterprises, youth, the peri-urban interface, and rural-urban linkages. My main research areas are West Africa and Latin America, though I have recently also begun to work in Southeast Asia. I have extensive experience of conducting fieldwork in a wide range of settings, including rural and urban, collecting and analysing both quantitative and qualitative data. Recent research projects include:

Research interests

My research has been focused on how the management of small scale agricultural systems in the tropics influences the biogeochemical processes of the soil and vice versa. My current research aims to assess the influence of land use, agricultural management and inherent soil properties, in particular soil texture and clay mineralogy on the storage and the decomposition of soil organic carbon (SOC) in tropical soils. Within this context field work has been carried out in Ghana and is to be carried out in the Solomon Islands. The field data will be combined with laboratory analyses and experiments to construct a model that expresses the relationships between land use, soil parameters and carbon stocks and turnover rates in common low-input tropical agricultural systems

Research interests and aims

Farming systems in the tropics, natural resource management, land use change, and livelihood strategies: Experience in assessment of environmental effects of land use intensification in relation to introduction of new technologies (with special focus on animal traction) into farming systems in the tropics, including evaluation of land resources and more generally natural resource management. Data on changes in land use over time, using remote sensing techniques, has been linked with studies of the natural resource management in order to improve the understanding of the livelihoods of rural communities.
